Ditch the fat loss diet - try this approach instead

Diets for fat loss are promoted everywhere - each one of them claiming to be superior and more effective than the other.

With all the research and knowledge we have regarding nutrition, shouldn't we have found the "perfect diet" by now? One that always works?

First of all - let's sort out how we define a fat loss diet in this context; "a restricted way of eating and drinking that is implemented specifically to lose fat".

Most people refer to fat loss diets as a verb (e.g. "I'm going on a diet"). These type of diets are often dreaded and therefore usually ends up in failure or as temporary fat loss only to gain it all back again a few months later.

So, how come most fat loss diets only last short term and why doesn't the results stick?

The answer to this question is; motivation. The problem with motivation is that it never lasts. Sooner or later you will find that motivation decreases and those powerful reasons why you decided to start a fat loss diet in the first place fades and lose its importance.

This phenomenon of motivation that dies out is just human nature - quite predictable and very common.


If fat loss diets and motivation can't be relied upon for fat loss - you might feel there's no point in even trying...maybe you think to yourself that some people manage their weight and successfully lose fat because they have some kind of special gift, extra amounts of willpower or super human genetics.

Well, we would say those are all good excuses, but bad explanations.

A better way to analyze why some people succeed with fat loss and weight management is to look at the behaviours and daily habits they follow. Because in the absolute majority of cases (no - chances are you aren't "special"), it simply comes down to your daily actions.

Sometimes these actions can be really small, such as; drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated throughout the day, or bigger, such as; choosing smaller portions, chewing your food properly and stop eating at 80% full.

Our suggestion is that instead of crashing headfirst in to another fat loss diet; take advantage of that initial burst of motivation and instead focus on channeling your efforts towards building healthy and strategic habits that lead to a long lasting changes in behaviour.

In our opinion, this approach is key for fat loss and a healthy, sustainable relationship with nutrition.
